Malaysia – China Diplomatic Relations, 1974

When one handshake changed the course of history.

In May 1974, Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak made a historic visit to the People's Republic of China, becoming the first Malaysian leader to do so. His meeting with Premier Zhou Enlai marked the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, opening a new chapter in regional diplomacy.

At a time when few nations had taken this step, Malaysia chose dialogue over division and cooperation over uncertainty. The decision reflected Tun Abdul Razak's pragmatic and forward-looking approach to foreign policy, strengthening peace, trust, and economic ties that continue to shape the relationship between the two countries today.

Some journeys cross borders. This one helped shape the future of a nation.
